How imported goods should flow through Business Central
- 1
Purchase order to overseas supplier
Currency, incoterms and expected arrival recorded on the order so buyers see what is on the water.
- 2
Receipt at the port-side warehouse
Goods received into the right location and bin, with lot numbers captured at the dock.
- 3
Landed cost applied
Freight, duty, brokerage and drayage invoices assigned to the receipt with item charges so margins reflect true cost.
- 4
Sell and ship
Orders picked and shipped from stock you can trust, with lot tracing if a customer raises a question.
- 5
Close the month
Inventory valuation matches the ledger without a spreadsheet reconciliation.
What sets New Jersey companies apart
Few states pack as much pharmaceutical, chemical and life sciences activity into such a small area, and the supplier base around those companies is large: packaging firms, contract labs, ingredient distributors and equipment makers. Many of them must show lot history on demand and keep regulated and non-regulated products apart in the warehouse. Business Central's item tracking and warehouse locations handle the ERP side; validated quality processes remain in dedicated systems.
The other defining feature is logistics. The port, the airport and the warehouse corridor along the Turnpike make New Jersey the distribution point for a huge share of the Northeast. Importers and third-party warehouses there need bins, directed picking, cross-docking and EDI with retail customers. That is where Business Central earns its keep, and where poor setup hurts fastest.
New Jersey sales tax points
- โSales and use tax administered by the New Jersey Division of Taxation
- โMost sales carry one statewide rate rather than county and city layers, which keeps tax areas simple
- โQualified businesses in Urban Enterprise Zones may charge a reduced rate, set up as its own tax area
- โMost clothing is exempt, handled through item tax groups
- โResale and exempt-use certificates stored on customer cards
- โOut-of-state shipments into New York, Pennsylvania and beyond mapped to those states where you have nexus

New Jersey buyers ask us
Can Business Central calculate landed cost on imported goods?
Yes, through item charges assigned to purchase receipts. Freight, duty, brokerage and other costs are posted against the goods they relate to, split by quantity, weight, value or amount. Inventory value and cost of goods sold then reflect the true cost. We set up the charge types and train buyers on how to assign them.
Is Business Central enough for a pharmaceutical supplier in New Jersey?
For distribution, packaging and many contract manufacturing businesses, it covers the ERP needs well. Lot and expiry tracking, quarantine locations and item tracing are standard. It is not a validated quality management system, and FDA obligations stay with your company and its QMS. We connect the two where needed.
Do you have a New Jersey office?
No, our office is in Phoenix, and we deliver New Jersey projects remotely. Sessions run in your Eastern business hours, which are two or three hours ahead of Arizona depending on the season. On-site days for a warehouse walk or training are written into the scope when they make sense. The Newark page covers projects in that part of the state.
How do we handle New York and Pennsylvania customers?
Business Central assigns tax by ship-to address, so each state gets its own tax area. New York in particular has local rates that vary, so many companies selling there connect a tax engine. Your tax advisor confirms where you have nexus. We then build the tax setup to match.
