Milwaukee's makers and the revenue that follows the sale
Milwaukee built its reputation on heavy manufacturing: engines, motorcycles, industrial controls, mining and construction equipment, and a long list of machine shops and foundries that supply them. The city has also become known for water technology, with pump, valve, meter and treatment companies clustered here alongside university research on freshwater. Port Milwaukee on Lake Michigan, Mitchell International Airport and the I-94 corridor toward Chicago keep materials and finished goods moving.
Many of these businesses share a quiet shift. A machine built years ago still earns money every time the customer orders a replacement part or calls for a repair. Over time that aftermarket grows into a real division, with its own customers, pricing and technicians, while the accounting still treats it as an afterthought.
Business Central can hold both sides. Production orders and routings run the plant, while service items, service orders and contracts track installed equipment and the work done on it. Service management requires the Premium licence, which is worth confirming early so there are no surprises when the quote arrives.
Four Milwaukee manufacturer profiles we see
Pump, valve and meter makers
Water technology firms sell products to utilities and contractors, then support them in the field for years.
- โSerial numbers per unit
- โInstalled base by customer
- โWarranty tracking
Foundries and fabricators
Casting and fabrication shops quote per part, buy metal by weight and watch scrap and yield closely.
- โRoutings and work centers
- โScrap on production BOMs
- โSubcontracted finishing
Industrial automation suppliers
Builders of panels, drives and control systems combine engineered-to-order projects with catalog products.
- โJobs for engineered orders
- โAssembly for standard units
- โField commissioning time
Printing and packaging converters
Converters producing labels, cartons and flexible packaging run short jobs for many customers on shared presses.
- โEstimates to production
- โCustomer-owned materials
- โPress capacity planning
Bringing service and spare parts into the same ledger
- 1
Build the installed base
Every unit you have shipped becomes a service item linked to its customer, serial number and bill of materials, starting with the ones still under contract.
- 2
Price parts on purpose
Spare parts get their own price lists and discount rules, separate from new equipment, so aftermarket margin shows up clearly.
- 3
Run service orders
Repairs and field visits become service orders that consume parts and technician time, then invoice or post to warranty.
- 4
Report the division honestly
Dimensions split results between original equipment, parts and service, so leadership sees which side actually earns the profit.
Ownership changes we plan around in family firms
- โA generational handover where the next owners want reporting the founder never needed
- โA sale to an outside buyer, where clean monthly financials and inventory records speed up due diligence
- โA carve-out of one product line into its own company, with shared services charged between entities
How we deliver to a Milwaukee plant
Design workshops, configuration and testing run over video from our office in Phoenix, on Central Time hours that suit first shift. A plant floor is a different matter: walking the production line, the parts cage and the shipping dock with your supervisors surfaces details no workshop does. We plan those visits into the scope when the design needs them, along with training for shift teams who learn better at the machine than on a screen.
Milwaukee manufacturers ask
Can Business Central track every machine we have ever sold?
Yes, as service items tied to customers and serial numbers. You can load the installed base in stages, starting with units still under warranty or contract. Each record can hold the bill of materials, so parts lookups are faster. Older units can be added as customers order parts for them.
Do we need Premium licences for service management?
Yes, service management is part of Business Central Premium, not Essentials. Users who only work in finance or sales may not need the higher tier, depending on Microsoft's current licensing rules. We review who does what before recommending licences. Microsoft's pricing page and the partner quote give the current figures.
Our foundry prices by weight. Can Business Central quote that way?
Yes, with units of measure and a pricing approach that converts weight into a price per part. Metal surcharges that move with market prices often need a small extension or a regular price update routine. We look at how your quotes are built today before choosing. Your estimators test the result with real parts.
We are close to Chicago. Can you support a plant in Illinois too?
Yes, a second plant can be another location or another company in the same tenant. That depends on whether it is a separate legal entity. Illinois tax setup is different from Wisconsin's, so each location gets the right tax areas. Our Chicago page covers that market.
