Signs a Wisconsin company has outgrown its system
- โInventory counts rarely match the books, so the plant keeps its own spreadsheet
- โProduction costs are estimated once a year instead of rolling up from actual orders
- โMonth end depends on one person who understands a pile of custom reports
- โCustomer EDI orders are keyed by hand into the order system
- โThe old NAV or GP version has not been upgraded because the customizations are fragile
- โLot tracing for a customer complaint takes a day of digging through paper records
Cheese, dairy and food processing on Business Central
Wisconsin's dairy plants and food processors ask more of an ERP than most. Milk arrives daily, turns into cheese that ages for weeks or months, and ships by the case or by weight to retailers and distributors. Business Central handles lots, expiration dates, production orders and item tracing well, which covers traceability and recall readiness.
Two areas need honest discussion. Catch weight, where you buy or sell by actual weight but count by the piece, is not standard in Business Central, so processors who need it add an extension built for food companies. Producer payroll for milk suppliers, with component pricing and hauling deductions, is also specialized and often stays in a dedicated system that posts into the ledger.
For breweries, sausage makers and cranberry processors the picture is simpler. Batch production, packaging BOMs, lot tracking and wholesale pricing are core features. The work goes into the setup: units of measure, costing method and how quality holds are recorded.
Wisconsin manufacturing styles and how Business Central handles each
Wisconsin tax and reporting points
State sales and use tax
The Wisconsin Department of Revenue administers sales and use tax, set up as the base jurisdiction in Business Central.
County taxes
Most Wisconsin counties add a county sales tax, and some areas carry extra local taxes, so tax areas follow the delivery county.
Manufacturing exemptions
Wisconsin exempts qualifying manufacturing machinery and equipment, so purchases need the right tax group and documentation.
Use tax on purchases
Items bought without Wisconsin tax and used in the business accrue use tax, reviewed before each return.
Wisconsin manufacturers ask
We run Dynamics NAV 2016 in Green Bay. Is Business Central an upgrade or a new system?
It is the direct successor to NAV, so the data model will feel familiar. Customizations built into the NAV code, though, need to be rebuilt as extensions or replaced with standard features. We review every customization and recommend keep, rebuild or retire. Our NAV migration page explains the path in more detail.
Can Business Central handle our cheese aging inventory?
Yes, aging product can be tracked by lot with dates, locations and quality status. Some plants treat aging as a separate item or location so they can see young and aged stock apart. If you sell by catch weight, an extension is usually needed. We design this with your plant manager before configuration.
Do you visit plants in Wisconsin?
Yes, when a visit will shape the design. Walking a production floor often reveals steps nobody mentioned in workshops, and training a shift team works better in person. Most other work runs on video in Central Time. Visits are agreed in the written scope.
How do you connect our EDI customers?
Through an EDI provider or AppSource connector, since Business Central does not handle EDI natively. Purchase orders from retailers become sales orders, and ship notices and invoices go back automatically. We map each trading partner's documents during design. Testing with real partner files happens before go-live.
