Why Washington's B&O tax shapes the chart of accounts
Washington has no personal income tax, but businesses pay the business and occupation tax, a tax on gross receipts administered by the Washington Department of Revenue. The rate depends on the classification of the activity: retailing, wholesaling, manufacturing and services are treated differently. A company that manufactures, sells wholesale and also sells direct can owe under several classifications at once.
Business Central does not calculate B&O tax, and it does not need to. What it must do is split revenue cleanly by classification so the return is a report, not a research project. We handle that with revenue accounts or a dimension per classification, depending on how your chart of accounts is built, and we agree the mapping with your tax advisor.
Retail sales tax adds a second layer. Washington sourcing is based on where the buyer receives the goods, so each delivery address needs the right local rate. Business Central tax areas can carry that, and many firms connect a tax engine to keep addresses and rates current.

How a Pacific Northwest rollout runs
- 1
Scope and fit
A scoping call covers entities, sites, channels and taxes, then the plan goes to you in writing.
- 2
Design with Microsoft 365 in mind
We plan how Outlook, Teams, Excel and SharePoint will work with Business Central from day one.
- 3
Configure and migrate
Setup, data mapping and integrations are built in a sandbox and reconciled with your finance team.
- 4
Train and launch
Role-based training, a dress rehearsal of cutover, then go-live timed away from harvest or year end.
When a Washington company should wait
Not every business needs an ERP yet. A single-entity services firm with no inventory and clean books may get more value from tightening its current tools. On the other end, a group with many countries, complex revenue recognition or very high transaction volumes may belong on Dynamics 365 Finance rather than Business Central. We compare both honestly and will point you to the smaller or larger option when it fits better.
Washington companies ask
Does Business Central file our B&O tax return?
No, B&O returns are filed with the Department of Revenue outside Business Central. What Business Central does is produce the revenue figures by classification, ready for the return. We design accounts or dimensions for that split during setup. Your tax advisor checks the mapping before go-live.
We grow and pack apples. Can Business Central track fruit by orchard block?
Yes, lot numbers can carry the block, variety and harvest date, and dimensions can report costs by block. Packing and storage steps can be modeled with assembly or production orders. Specialist packhouse software may still run grading lines, with summaries posted into Business Central. We map where that boundary sits during design.
Can our team use Business Central from Outlook and Teams?
Yes, Business Central has an Outlook add-in and a Teams app. Staff can see customer details, create quotes from emails and share records in Teams chats. That fits Washington firms already built on Microsoft 365. We set up and train these features as part of the rollout.
How do you work with us from Arizona?
Remotely, on your Pacific Time hours, with visits when they add value. From March to November, Phoenix and Seattle share the same clock, and in winter we are one hour ahead of you. Video workshops cover most design and testing. On-site days for training or a plant walk are listed in the written scope.
