Where Raleigh finance teams feel the strain
Growth in the Triangle often comes in funding rounds rather than steady years. A company closes a round, hires forty people, opens a lab or a second office, and suddenly the controller is asked for department budgets, cash runway by program and a clean audit trail for investors. The spreadsheet stack that worked at twenty staff cannot answer those questions quickly.
Business Central answers them by putting purchasing, projects, time, fixed assets and the general ledger in one database. Dimensions tag every entry by department, program, grant or client, so the same posting feeds the board pack, the budget review and the funder report. Approvals on purchase orders stop the late surprise of a lab order nobody signed off.
There is a limit worth naming. A research-stage biotech with no inventory and a small finance team may be better served by a strong cloud accounting package for another year or two. We would say that plainly on the first call.
Raleigh sectors and the setups they need
Software and SaaS
Subscription billing, deferral schedules for annual contracts, and revenue by product line through dimensions rather than extra accounts.
Life sciences and labs
Grant and program tracking, lot-tracked consumables, fixed assets for equipment, and purchase approvals that satisfy auditors.
Engineering and construction
Jobs with budgets, work in process, retainage handled through job billing, and cost reports a project manager can read.
Government contractors
Timesheets tied to projects, indirect cost pools kept in their own accounts, and billing that follows contract lines.
How a Triangle engagement unfolds
- 1
A working call
Your controller and one operations lead walk us through a real month: bills, payroll journals, project billing and the board report. Gaps surface quickly.
- 2
Design on paper
We write the chart of accounts, dimensions, approval rules and integrations into a scope you approve before configuration begins.
- 3
Sandbox and data
We configure a sandbox, load trial data from QuickBooks, Xero or Sage, and reconcile trial balances line by line with your team.
- 4
Role-based training
Short recorded sessions for approvers, project managers and accountants, each covering only what that person touches.
- 5
Live and first close
Cutover lands on a quiet week, and we stay alongside your accountants through the first month-end.

How we work with you from Arizona
Our office is in Phoenix, and Raleigh sits two or three hours ahead of us depending on the season, so we open our day early to catch your morning. Workshops, testing and training run over video in short blocks. If a lab stockroom or a warehouse needs a walk-through, we plan that visit together and write it into the scope.
Questions Raleigh buyers raise
Can Business Central handle grant and program accounting?
Yes, for most funded programs it can. Each grant or program becomes a dimension value, so every purchase, timesheet and journal carries it. Budgets per grant let you compare spend against the award. Very complex federal cost accounting may need an add-on, and we test that against your funder rules before recommending anything.
We are on QuickBooks Online. Is it too early to move?
Maybe, and that is worth an honest answer. If you have one entity, no inventory and simple billing, QuickBooks may still fit. The move usually makes sense once you add entities, project billing, approvals or investors asking for reporting QuickBooks cannot produce. Our QuickBooks guide lays out the signals.
Do you handle subscription revenue?
Yes, within Business Central's deferral features and, where needed, a subscription billing extension. Annual contracts can post to deferred revenue and release monthly on a schedule. The right design depends on how often plans change mid-term. We look at your contract terms before choosing an approach.
Can one system serve our research arm and our commercial arm?
Usually yes, by giving each legal entity its own company in one environment. Research spend stays tagged by grant or program, while the commercial side runs orders, inventory and billing. Consolidation then gives investors a combined view. If both arms sit inside one entity, dimensions separate them instead.
