Three kinds of San Diego project
Biotech and medical devices
Early-stage firms spend on research before revenue, often funded by grants and investors who want clear reporting by program.
- โJobs or dimensions per program
- โFixed assets for lab equipment
- โGrant spending reports
Navy and defense contractors
Ship repair, electronics and engineering firms work to contracts with detailed cost and time records.
- โJob costing by contract
- โResource time sheets
- โIndirect cost pools via dimensions
Tijuana manufacturing
A US company with a maquiladora or contract plant across the border runs parallel entities that must reconcile every month.
- โMexico company in Business Central
- โUSD and MXN
- โIntercompany postings
Running a Mexican entity next to a US one
Business Central is available in Mexico as well as the United States, so a cross-border group can keep both companies in one environment with separate legal books. Transactions between them post through intercompany partners, which means the US parent's purchase of assembly services from the Mexican plant automatically creates the matching entry on the other side. Consolidation then combines both sets of books in dollars.
The Mexican side carries its own obligations, including electronic invoicing requirements set by the Mexican tax authority. Those are normally handled by a localization extension or a certified provider, and your Mexican accountants must be part of the design. We coordinate with them rather than guessing at Mexican tax rules ourselves.
Choosing a costing approach for biotech and defense
Other San Diego industries we see
- โCraft breweries needing batch production, keg tracking and excise reporting through an extension
- โTelecom and wireless engineering firms with project billing and subcontractors
- โTourism and hospitality groups consolidating several operating companies
- โMaritime suppliers serving shipyards and the fishing fleet
- โConsumer brands selling online with inventory held at third-party warehouses
- โNonprofits and research institutes tracking restricted funds by dimension
San Diego questions
Can Business Central run our Tijuana plant as a separate company?
Yes, Business Central supports a Mexico company alongside your US company, each with its own currency and chart of accounts. Intercompany postings link the two and consolidation produces group reports in dollars. Mexican electronic invoicing is typically handled through a localization extension or provider, which we plan with your Mexican accountants.
Is Business Central suitable for an FDA-regulated medical device company?
It can support one, but it is not validated out of the box. Device makers normally pair Business Central with a quality management system and document how they validate the ERP functions they rely on. We are clear about that split during scoping so nobody assumes the ERP covers quality compliance.
We are a small defense subcontractor. Will Business Central satisfy our contract audits?
It depends on your contract terms. Fixed-price subcontractors often run well on jobs, dimensions and time sheets. Firms with cost-type contracts and formal audit exposure usually need a specialist government contracting add-on, and we will recommend that when it applies.
How often would we see you in person?
Only when it helps. San Diego projects run mainly over video from Phoenix, and on-site time is reserved for plant visits, warehouse design or training, agreed in advance. Many clients never need a visit at all.
Do you handle biotech companies that are not yet selling anything?
Yes. Pre-revenue firms mainly need clean purchasing, program costing, fixed assets and board reporting, and Business Central covers that without the inventory modules. The setup grows with you when products reach the market.
