Who runs the servers, and why it matters
SAP Business One: partner or self hosted
The software runs on SAP HANA or Microsoft SQL Server, installed on your hardware or in a data center managed by your SAP partner. You or the partner own patching, backups and capacity.
Business Central: Microsoft hosted by default
The online edition lives in Microsoft's cloud. Backups, security patches and infrastructure are Microsoft's job, and your team signs in with the same account it uses for Outlook.
What that means for upgrades
Moving SAP Business One to a new version is a planned event that someone schedules, tests and pays for. Business Central online receives two release waves a year, plus monthly updates, inside a window you control.
What that means for IT headcount
Firms without an IT team often prefer not to own a database server. Firms with a capable IT team, or a hosting partner they trust, may value the extra control SAP Business One gives them.

Where SAP Business One earns its place
The clearest case is a subsidiary of a group whose headquarters already runs SAP. Head office finance knows the terminology, the group reporting team may have tools built for SAP data, and SAP offers integration paths between Business One and its larger products. Choosing Business Central there means building a bridge that SAP customers can often avoid.
A second case is a company that deliberately wants its ERP on its own hardware, with SAP HANA underneath for fast in-memory analysis, and has an experienced SAP partner nearby in its industry. Business One has a long history in wholesale, light manufacturing and consumer products, and some partners carry deep vertical add-ons.

SAP Business One or Business Central: common questions
Is SAP Business One available in the cloud?
Yes, but usually as a hosted installation run by an SAP partner or cloud provider, rather than as a single multi-tenant service run by SAP. That gives more control over timing and configuration. It also means someone other than the software maker is responsible for the servers, so ask who that is and what they commit to in writing.
Does Business Central handle manufacturing as well as SAP Business One?
For assembly and standard production, yes: the Premium license adds production orders, routings, work centers and MRP planning. Both products lean on add-ons for advanced scheduling or detailed shop floor capture. Bring your most complicated work order to both demos and compare what each shows you without customization.
Our parent company uses SAP. Can we still choose Business Central?
You can, and many subsidiaries do when the parent only needs a monthly trial balance. The work lies in mapping your chart of accounts to the group's and automating the monthly submission. If the parent expects real-time transaction data or SAP-specific processes, staying in the SAP family is usually wiser.
Which is easier for a small finance team to run after go-live?
Business Central online tends to demand less, because there is no server or upgrade project to manage. SAP Business One can be just as calm when a good hosting partner takes on that work. The honest answer depends on the partner behind either product more than on the software itself.
