Same vendor, different size of problem
Dynamics 365 Finance grew out of Dynamics AX, a system built for enterprises with many legal entities, shared service centres and heavy regulatory reporting. Business Central grew out of Dynamics NAV, a system built for companies where one finance team does most of the work and an owner wants answers without a department of analysts.
Both now run in Microsoft's cloud, both connect to Microsoft 365 and Power Platform, and both get regular updates. The difference is in how much structure, configuration and specialist skill each one expects. Finance gives you more levers and asks for more people to pull them. Business Central gives you fewer levers and a much shorter learning curve.
Picking the bigger system too early is a common and expensive mistake. So is outgrowing the smaller one and patching it with extensions for years. The rest of this page is about telling those two situations apart.
How the two ERPs line up on what a CFO asks
Signals that point to one product or the other
Dynamics 365 Finance is the better fit
The enterprise product earns its extra weight when the organization is complex in ways a smaller ERP would have to fake.
- βMany legal entities across several countries
- βShared service centres paying and collecting for the group
- βBudget control that blocks spending before it happens
- βHeavy transaction volumes and strict segregation of duties
- βAn internal IT team able to own an enterprise system
Business Central is the better fit
The mid-market product wins when speed, simplicity and a small admin footprint matter more than configurability.
- βOne to a handful of companies, mostly in one country
- βA finance team of a few people who also run the system
- βDistribution, projects or light manufacturing in the same ledger
- βOwners who want to be live and reporting within one planning cycle
- βA preference for configuring over building

Costs that sit outside the licence line
Internal people
Finance and operations systems at enterprise scale usually need in-house functional and technical owners. Business Central customers often manage with a power user and a partner on call.
Testing effort
Finance updates arrive as service updates that customers regression test, frequently with automated test suites. Business Central updates also need a check, but the surface area is smaller.
Partner pool
Both products have large partner networks, but Finance projects draw on scarcer, more specialized consultants. That affects availability as much as budget.
Reporting build
Finance has powerful reporting options and a data export to a data lake; getting value from them usually means an analytics project. Business Central's standard reports and Power BI apps cover more of a mid-sized company's needs out of the box.
Can you start small and move up later?
Yes, but treat it as a new implementation, not an upgrade. There is no button that turns a Business Central tenant into Dynamics 365 Finance. Master data can be exported and loaded, open items and balances can be carried over, and the Dataverse integration helps with customers, vendors and products, but processes, reports and extensions are rebuilt.
That is not a reason to buy the bigger product early. A company that runs Business Central well for years and then moves up, with a clean chart, clean master data and clear processes, has an easier enterprise project than one that bought too much and never fully adopted it.
Business Central and D365 Finance, answered
Is there a company size where D365 Finance becomes the default?
There is no hard cut-off in headcount or revenue, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. Structure matters more than size: a large single-country distributor can run very well on Business Central, while a smaller group with entities on three continents may need Finance. We look at entity count, countries, volumes and the internal team before recommending either.
Can Business Central handle multiple companies and consolidation?
Yes. Several companies can live in one environment, intercompany transactions can be sent between them, and the consolidation features combine results with currency translation. What it does not offer is the depth of shared services and cross-entity policy control that Finance provides. For a handful of entities that is rarely a problem.
Does D365 Finance include inventory and manufacturing?
Those processes sit in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, a separate app that is commonly deployed alongside Finance. Business Central, by contrast, includes inventory, purchasing and warehouse work in one product, with manufacturing in the Premium edition. That packaging difference often surprises buyers comparing the two.
Which one has better Copilot features?
Both receive Copilot capabilities, and Microsoft adds more with each release. The features differ because the products differ, for example help with bank reconciliation and marketing text in Business Central, and collections and financial insights scenarios in Finance. Choose the ERP for its fit to your business, not for a single AI feature, because those will keep changing.
Do you implement D365 Finance too?
Our practice centres on Business Central and the Power Platform, and we advise on Dynamics 365 Finance fit. If the assessment says Finance is right for you, we tell you so in writing and explain what the project will need from your side, so you can choose an enterprise partner with open eyes.
