Start with what your company actually does
If your business sells time, expertise, subscriptions or grants, most of the operational work happens in CRM, project tools, billing platforms or fundraising software. The ERP's job is to hold a clean, multi-dimensional ledger and consolidate entities quickly. That is precisely the ground Sage Intacct was designed for.
If your business buys, stores, moves, assembles or makes physical goods, the ledger is only half the story. Purchase orders, receipts, bin locations, lot numbers, landed cost and production all create accounting entries. Keeping them in the same database as the ledger removes interfaces, timing gaps and reconciliations. That is the ground Business Central covers natively.
Plenty of companies sit in between, such as a services firm with a small parts store, and that is where the comparison needs care rather than a quick verdict.
Why finance teams choose Sage Intacct
Dimensional general ledger
Location, department, project, customer, vendor and more are standard dimensions, which suits organizations that report many ways without a sprawling chart of accounts.
Multi-entity consolidation
Groups with many entities, including nonprofits with affiliated organizations, value Intacct's consolidation and intercompany tools.
Subscription and contract revenue
Its contracts and revenue management features appeal to software and subscription businesses that need to recognize revenue on complex schedules.
Accounting firm familiarity
Many CPA firms work with Sage Intacct and some resell it, so outsourced accounting teams often know it well.
How the two compare on finance and operations
Three company profiles and our honest lean
Multi-entity nonprofit
Grants, restricted funds and many affiliated entities, with no inventory. Sage Intacct is a natural fit and we would tell you to look there first.
- βGrant and fund tracking
- βMany entities
- βNo stock to manage
Professional services with projects
Both work. Business Central wins if you want projects, purchasing and finance in one place with Microsoft 365; Intacct wins if your PSA tool already runs the projects.
- βProject billing
- βTime from a PSA tool
- βExpense capture
Distributor with light assembly
Stock, warehouses, vendors and kitting sit at the center of this business, so an ERP that holds them natively removes daily reconciliation.
- βMultiple warehouses
- βLot tracking
- βAssembly orders

Settling the decision in four meetings
- 1
Draw your current system map
List every tool that touches money today: CRM, billing, payroll, expense capture, inventory spreadsheets, bank feeds. The map shows whether you need one ERP or a strong ledger surrounded by specialist tools.
- 2
Count the interfaces each option needs
For Sage Intacct, note which operational tools must feed the ledger. For Business Central, note which of those tools it would replace. Every interface you keep is something to monitor and repair.
- 3
Run a month-end in both demos
Give each vendor the same entities, allocations and consolidation steps. Your controller should close a sample period and compare the effort, not the screens.
- 4
Test reporting with your own board pack
Ask both to rebuild two pages of your real board reporting. How much is done by the finance team alone, and how much needs a consultant, is a lasting cost worth seeing early.
Sage Intacct and Business Central questions from finance leaders
Is Sage Intacct's reporting better than Business Central's?
Intacct's dimensional reports are a real strength and many controllers like them. Business Central offers financial reports, Excel-based layouts and Power BI, which is very capable once the dimensions are set up well. The honest difference is less about power and more about where your team prefers to build reports: inside the finance system or in Excel and Power BI.
Can Sage Intacct handle our inventory?
It has an inventory control module that covers item tracking and valuation for many businesses. Companies with several warehouses, bin-level picking, production or complex landed cost usually find it stretched. If stock is central to how you make money, test your warehouse processes in detail with both vendors.
We already use Sage 100 or Sage 50. Is Intacct the natural next step?
It is a common path, and Sage makes it easy to consider. Business Central is also a frequent destination for Sage 100 users, particularly distributors and light manufacturers. Decide on the shape of system you need first, then the vendor, rather than following the brand.
Do both handle US sales tax?
Both calculate sales tax and both connect with tax engines such as Avalara for companies selling across many states. Business Central's US version also supports 1099 reporting for vendors. Confirm which tax engine connector each partner would install and who maintains it.
