Government contractors: what Business Central does and does not do
Federal contracting brings accounting rules that commercial ERPs were not designed around. Cost-reimbursable and time-and-materials contracts need costs segregated by contract, indirect rate pools for fringe, overhead and general and administrative costs, allowable and unallowable cost tracking, and incurred cost reporting. Contractors pursuing larger cost-type work also face audits of their accounting system.
Standard Business Central gives you jobs, dimensions, time sheets and allocations, which cover a fixed-price or small time-and-materials contractor well. For full indirect rate calculation, provisional billing and audit-ready contract reporting, you need either an AppSource add-on built for government contractors or a dedicated government contracting system. We will tell you which side you are on during the first conversation, and we will not stretch Business Central beyond what your contracts require.

Maryland tax setup points
- โMaryland sales and use tax is administered by the Comptroller of Maryland, with no county or city sales tax layered on top
- โSales to federal agencies are generally exempt when paid by the government, so customers are flagged accordingly
- โResearch and manufacturing exemptions depend on use and are recorded with certificates
- โCompanies serving Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and DC need each jurisdiction's rules set side by side
- โBusinesses shipping widely often add Avalara for rates and returns
- โYour tax advisor signs off before the setup is locked
Maryland buyers ask
Is Business Central enough for a DCAA-audited government contractor?
On its own, usually not for cost-type contracts. It handles jobs, time and allocations, but indirect rate calculation and incurred cost reporting generally need a government contractor add-on or a specialist system. Smaller fixed-price contractors often manage well with standard features. We assess your contract mix first.
Can Business Central track grant-funded research spending?
Yes, through jobs or dimensions per grant, budgets and approval workflows on purchases. Reports compare actual spending to budget by grant and cost category. Complex federal grant reporting may still be prepared outside the system from Business Central data. We design the structure around the reports your funders expect.
How do Port of Baltimore importers handle landed cost?
Business Central assigns freight, duty, brokerage and insurance to received items through item charges. Those costs then flow into inventory value and margin. We set up charge types and allocation rules that match how your invoices arrive. Multi-currency purchasing is standard.
Do you have a presence in Maryland?
No, our office is in Phoenix, and we deliver Maryland projects remotely during Eastern Time business hours. On-site days are planned when a warehouse, lab or plant visit is worth it. They are written into the scope. Video sessions handle the rest.
