Bank data into the ledger

Business Central bank feeds integration and statement import that make reconciliation routine.

A Business Central bank feeds integration gets your bank's transactions into Business Central without someone downloading and reformatting files every morning. There are two broad routes: an automated feed through an app from AppSource, or importing the statement files your bank already produces. Both end in the same place: the bank account reconciliation and the payment reconciliation journal. There, matching rules decide how much work a person still has to do. We help you choose the route per bank account and tune the matching so reconciliation stops being a month-end project.

Four ways a Business Central bank feed can arrive

AppSource feed app

A vendor's app connects to your bank through an aggregator or a bank API and pulls transactions on a schedule. Coverage varies by bank, so check yours first.

Statement file import

Download a file from online banking and import it into a reconciliation or payment journal. A data exchange definition maps the columns.

Automated file delivery

Larger banking relationships can drop statement files to a secure location on a schedule, where a job picks them up for import.

Manual entry

Still sensible for an account with a handful of movements a month, such as a dormant savings account or a small foreign account.

Business Central bank feeds: what Microsoft ships and what you add

Business Central handles the reconciliation side well out of the box. Its bank account reconciliation page imports statement lines and matches them to bank ledger entries by amount, date and text. The payment reconciliation journal goes a step further. It matches incoming and outgoing payments to open customer and vendor entries. Then it applies and posts them in one pass, with a match confidence on each suggestion.

The part that has changed over time is the automatic feed. Microsoft once offered a bank feed service built on Envestnet Yodlee inside Business Central. However, it has not been the same in every region or version. So we treat a Business Central bank feeds integration as an AppSource decision. We check which vendors support your banks and account types today.

Statement file import is the dependable fallback. Most US banks export CSV. Many also offer structured formats such as BAI2, which may need an app or a custom definition to read. A data exchange definition tells Business Central which column holds the date, amount, description and reference. Once you build it, an import takes a few clicks.

Business Central bank feed matching rules worth tuning

Situation
Why it fails to match
What to change
Customer pays several invoices at once
One bank line, many open entries
Ask customers for remittance detail and let the journal apply one payment to several entries
Card processor deposits net of fees
The deposit never equals any single invoice
Post card sales to a clearing account and book fees separately before matching
Bank description holds a reference, not a name
Text matching finds nothing useful
Add text-to-account mappings for recurring references
Monthly bank charges and interest
No open entry exists to match
Map the description text straight to the charges or interest account
Payroll funded as one debit
The provider's total does not look like a vendor payment
Post the payroll journal with the same total and date the bank shows

Setting up one Business Central bank feed for daily reconciliation

  1. 1

Confirm what the bank can deliver

Check the formats online banking offers and whether the bank can deliver files on a schedule. Also check whether a feed app supports the account.

  2. 2

Build or choose the import format

Create the data exchange definition for the file, or configure the feed app, and test it against a full month of real transactions.

  3. 3

    Load recurring mappings

Add text-to-account mappings for charges, interest, card fees and regular transfers before go-live, not after the first messy month.

  4. 4

    Reconcile daily for two weeks

Short daily sessions show which lines keep failing to match, and each one becomes a rule or a process change.

  5. 5

    Write the routine down

Record who imports, who works the exceptions and who posts, so the process survives holidays and staff changes.

When a Business Central bank feed is not worth paying for

  • โœ“The account has only a few movements a month and a file import is less effort than managing another app
  • โœ“Your bank already delivers files automatically to a location Business Central can pick up
  • โœ“The feed vendor lists your bank but not the account types you hold, such as sweep or lockbox accounts

Bank feed and reconciliation questions

Does Business Central have a built-in bank feed?

It depends on your version and region, so check your own environment rather than relying on older articles. Microsoft's earlier feed service did not reach every region. Many companies now use an AppSource app or statement file import instead. Reconciliation itself, including automatic matching, is a standard part of Business Central either way.

Is statement file import secure enough?

Yes, when you download files from the bank's own portal and import them promptly, rather than leave them in shared folders. The larger risk is usually on the outgoing side, where payment files need protection and approval. Business Central's Positive Pay export helps US banks catch altered checks, and we review both directions when we set up banking.

Can one feed app cover accounts at several banks?

Often yes, since aggregator-based apps connect to many institutions, but coverage for business accounts varies widely. We list every account you hold and check each against the vendor's current bank list before recommending an app. Where one bank is missing, that account can use file import alongside the feed.

More Business Central bank feeds integration questions

How are foreign currency bank accounts reconciled?

Business Central keeps each bank account in its own currency and reconciles it in that currency. The exchange rate adjustment handles the differences. The import format must carry amounts in the account currency. Beyond setting the currency code on the bank account card, setup matches a dollar account.

What if the matching suggestions are wrong?

Every suggested match can be reviewed and removed before posting, so nothing posts on the system's word alone. Low-confidence matches deserve a look every time. Repeated wrong matches usually point to a text mapping that is too broad, which we tighten during the first weeks of use.
