Odoo and Business Central on the details
The hidden cost question: custom code and yearly versions
Odoo's openness is its best feature and its main risk. Because anything can be changed, many implementations collect custom modules quickly. Odoo releases a new major version each year, and custom modules generally need to be checked and adapted before a database can move up. Companies that customize heavily sometimes stay on an old version for years because the upgrade effort keeps growing.
Odoo Online, the simplest hosting option, does not allow custom Python modules, so companies that need code move to Odoo.sh or self-hosting and take on more technical responsibility.
Business Central's extension model is stricter. Code sits beside Microsoft's application and reacts to published events, which limits what can be changed but means updates install underneath your extensions. Neither approach is free of maintenance; they simply put the work in different places, and your budget should show where.
When we would point you to Odoo

Multiple entities, intercompany, consolidation, dimensions and deferrals are core Business Central features rather than add-on modules.
No in-house developers
Most Business Central customers never write code; what they need comes from setup, AppSource apps or small partner-built extensions.
Microsoft is already the backbone
Microsoft 365, Entra ID sign-in, Power BI and Power Automate all connect with Microsoft's own tools.
Odoo versus Business Central: frequent questions
Is Odoo really free?
The Community edition is open source and has no license fee, but several apps, including full accounting, are only in the paid Enterprise edition. Hosting, implementation, custom modules and upgrades all cost money whichever edition you use. Compare the full cost of ownership over several years, not only the license line.
Can Odoo handle US accounting and sales tax?
Odoo has a US accounting localization and connects with tax services such as Avalara. Many US companies run it successfully. Check with your CPA that the reports they need, such as 1099 filings and your lender's covenant pack, come out without manual rework.
How do upgrades compare over five years?
Business Central online updates in place, and your extensions are tested against each release in a sandbox before it reaches production. Odoo asks each database to move to a new major version, and every custom module has to come along. Firms with little custom code find Odoo upgrades manageable; firms with a lot of it should budget for them as projects.
Is Business Central too big for a small company?
Not necessarily. Essentials suits small companies with inventory or several entities, and team member licenses keep light users affordable. If you only need invoicing and a simple ledger, though, Business Central may be more system than you need, and we would say so.
Can we move from Odoo to Business Central later?
Yes. Customers, vendors, items, open invoices and balances move across well, with history kept in an archive for lookup. The project resembles any other ERP move, so plan it with the same care as a first implementation.
